Mat Ball Tournament for Haiti Relief
THS Service Learning students and Key Club members along with the PE department encouraged students in grades 9-12 to form teams of 15-20 students to compete in a double elimination tournament to raise money for Haiti relief. A faculty jeans day was also organized to help sponsor the teams. 7 teams competed and approximately 150 students participated in the tournament. Students were asked to donate a minimum of $5 to play and outside donations were collected to offset the cost of a tournament t-shirt. Service Learning students designed a t-shirt bearing the image of Haiti's flag and their motto: "Unity Makes Strength".

Go Green with 718 – Girl Scouts Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle!
Our troop, Burbank Girl Scout Junior Troop 718, decided to earn our Girl Scout Bronze Award by designing a project that promotes environmental-friendliness and can help make a positive impact in our community.
We decided for our Bronze Award we wanted to do something to help the environment. Our project’s goal was to promote environmental friendliness throughout our community. Our troop held a recycling drive for cans and plastic bottles and we colleclted and recycled over 370 pounds of recyclable material. The money we earned from our recycle drive was used to purchase eco-friendly bags that we customized and plan to give out to our community as a message for EVERYONE to remember the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!
We will be passing out our FREE reusable bags this Sunday, April 25 as a participant in our city's "Green Zone" event at Downtown Burbank's Art Festival.
We hope to continue to serve our community as well as our planet by addressing environmental issues and to do our part to make the world a better and greener place!

NWMS Gives Its All!
Northwest Middle School students will participate in community service learning days by grade level on May 17, 18, and June 4, 2010. All students will participate in a variety of community service activities around the area! We are pioneers in this endeavor and very excited. Reflection is important to impact the students before, during, and after the service experience. S.M.A.R.T. Team at NWMS has teamed up with the Community Service Planning Team to conduct a Lunch and Learn at the school on Friday, April 23, 2010. Team members set up a table in the lunch commons with large papers each asking a question to contemplate prior to going into the community to serve. Students wrote their answers about what talents they have to help others, how they think their day of service will effect others, whether they prefer to do service work alone or as a team and why, and what responsibilities they have as a young citizen on the charts. Answers where thoughtful and awesome and will be summarized for morning announcements the week following the Lunch and Learn as well as immediately prior to and following the service learning days. NWMS is a caring community and wants to share with others!
Earth Day Tree Planting
Middle School students will research the appropriate type of tree to plant on our school playground for shade. They will plant the tree and take care of it until it matures.
Salmen High Green and Growing
Salmen High’s newly formed student initiated environmental organization, the EARTH Group, has developed an on campus conservation program. These students have used research findings to educate fellow students and community members about the importance of protecting the environment, and at the same time, organized a long-term, sustainable conservation effort at the school level.
The ultimate goal of the project is to uncover area needs and issues requiring activism which will lead to the design of a conservation project for implementation in the larger community. The student group and faculty sponsors have collaborated with representatives from Keep Slidell Beautiful, Slidell Tree Board, American Forest Foundation, Salmen High PTSA, and Department of Environmental Quality to carry out a year long theme of Green and Growing.
On Saturday, April 24 parents, students, faculty and members of Keep Slidell Beautiful will join forces for a Clean Up Day. Students have created and placed posters around the campus to bring attention to the importance of recycling and keeping the grounds litter-free. Students and faculty are also conducting weekly drives by collecting cans and paper from classrooms for recycling.
For its efforts, Salmen received a grant from Project Learning Tree, a national organization that provides funds “for students to ‘learn by doing’ in hands-on projects that improve an aspect of their community’s environment.” Salmen’s program was one of two Louisiana school projects awarded funding for the 2010 grant cycle.
Watershed Helpers
The Scott River Watershed, a major tributary to the Klamath River drainage system, is experiencing habitat degradation related to agricultural diversion of stream flows, removal of riparian vegetation due to overgrazing and water quality problems related to runoff from recent intensive logging practices. Current information provided by the Department of Fish and Game and the American Fisheries Society indicates that the salmon population in the Scott River is at a high risk of loss. There had been a strong run of salmon and steelhead in the Scott River, including its tributaries, until recently. Etna High School, in the middle of Scott Valley, is a major component of this agricultural community. We have the unique opportunity to involve students in riparian restoration projects while educating them on the survival requirements and the importance of salmon to our region. A group of 25 high school students will work to organize, publicize, implement 5 separate watershed / ripararian restoration projects, to conclude with a Watershed Fair / Celebration. Middle and Elementary schools will be involved with each project.

Arkansas Earth Day Festival 2010
Our Americorps NCCC team will be volunteering at the Arkansas Earth Day Festival. Which is a free family friendly festival that will feature live local bands, food, informative booths and green products and services. The 2010 Arkansas Earth Day Festival theme this year is "Gateway to Green" because they wish it to be a spring board of inspiration for each attendee to become more environmentally conscious in their everyday choices.
Plant Patrol Activity
Activity involves removing invasive, non-native plants in Highland Glen Park, a wilderness and nature park located in North Utah County. Dalmatian Toadflax and Bull Thistle will be targeted. Reason for project: Invasive, non-native plant are harmful to the environment several ways. Many of them are toxic to local wildlife. Others can secrete toxins into the soil and make it hard for native plants to grow. Because wildlife avoid eating non-native plants, it provides an opportunity for non-native plants to outgrow native species. In addition, many species of non-native plants dry out early in the summer and become fire hazards. Spring and early summer is the best time for non-native plant removal because they haven't gone to seed yet. They are also easier to remove because they are smaller.
